Strategies for Parents, Coaches, and Institutions

Adults Your Role is Huge!

As a parent or coach, your role in a young athlete's life is huge. It starts with being a good listener and creating an open environment where they can talk about their feelings without fear. Encourage them to share, and when they do, listen without judgment. Recognize the pressure that comes with being a student-athlete and remind them that it's okay to not be okay sometimes.

Role of Institutions

For institutions, it's about providing resources and support systems dedicated to student-athlete mental health. This means having mental health professionals who understand the unique challenges faced by elite athletes. It's also about regular check-ins and making sure that athletes know where to go for help when they need it. Remember, it's not just about preventing problems; it's about promoting a healthy mindset and resilience.

Building a Supportive Community

Educating everyone involved in college sports - from the athletes themselves to their coaches and the wider university staff - is key. Workshops, seminars, and even informal discussions can go a long way in breaking down the stigma and building a supportive community. It's about showing young athletes that taking care of their mental health is just as important as physical training.
